Regulations and numbers of dry toilets at events
19 May 2023
Did you know? According to the DLR (French union of companies in the distribution, rental, maintenance and services sectors), if you opt for the dry toilet solution for an event for more than 1,000 people, you will need to provide a minimum of 13 cubicles and 14 urinals.
At the beginning of 2023, the DLR published its recommendations guide for dry toilet hire. Let us explain all of this to you!
The aim is to provide users with environmental and social guarantees. The new standards place particular emphasis on waste treatment, recovery and traceability. It’s also advisable to use a mobile dry toilet hire company that applies current standards in terms of the training and safety of its teams.
What is a dry toilet?
Dry toilets come in a variety of formats, from cubicles and units to public toilets, with litter or separation of solid and liquid waste. There’s something to suit all preferences, needs and budgets.
One model of dry toilet is the wood shavings toilet with bio-controlled litter. This simply replaces the traditional toilet flush with wood shavings that cover the waste and mask odours. The alternating layers of waste and shavings form a litter that we send to a recycling centre to create compost, biogas or energy, depending on the area.
Self-contained, odourless and eco-friendly, dry toilets are innovating and diversifying: seeing the development of a PRM version to accommodate all types of users, a version that separates solid and liquid waste to increase autonomy at your events and promote differentiated recycling, and female urinals to boost inclusiveness, reduce waiting times and to recover urine as an agricultural bio-solution.
The number of dry toilets required at an event according to the DLR
Dry toilets require the presence of a permanent attendant for the duration of your event. The sanitary attendant, trained and equipped to clean, disinfect and empty the dry toilets, will ensure that the equipment is clean and in good working order to provide users with the best possible conditions of hygiene, privacy and convenience.
It is also important to be aware of the number of toilets required for your event. You need to take into account the number of people attending the event, as well as the presence or absence of alcoholic beverages, which will influence the frequency of use of the dry toilets. All of the recommendations can be found in the diagram below:

Once you’ve followed these recommendations, you can use your dry toilets without any risk!
HAPPEE SERVICES can help you to ensure compliance with DLR recommendations
If you want to organise an event and opt for dry toilets, HAPPEE SERVICES will handle everything, ensuring compliance with current standards! We can provide different types of dry toilets made from eco-responsible materials. As well as being eco-responsible, the materials help to mask odours and offer you a pleasant experience.
What’s more, specialised teams trained in dry toilet maintenance will look after them throughout your event. This care is reflected in the presence of one or more sanitary attendants.
Lastly, we are committed to an environmentally respectful approach, since the waste can be recycled at a later date. Not only does this result in compost, it also generates electricity!
