Toilets are more than just a convenience, they are a necessity and a right. Yet our towns and cities are cruelly lacking in public toilets, and those that do exist pose problems in terms of respect for the environment, hygiene and usage.

Public toilets: a fundamental right ignored

The toilet, by definition the most intimate place, is most often associated with private space. This is perhaps one of the reasons why public toilets are largely absent from the agendas of our decision-makers today. Yet they meet a need that can affect anyone, at any time, irrespective of social class. While most towns and cities have places to relax, get around or eat, there is an obvious, if not glaringly obvious lack of accessible sanitary facilities. This situation particularly affects the most vulnerable among us: the elderly, pregnant women, parents with children, the homeless, the disabled and people with chronic illnesses. Many are forced to find precarious solutions that undermine their dignity.

We urgently need more public toilets in towns and cities. But above all, apart from the question of their number, we need to think about appropriate infrastructure and locations, facilities that are easy to access, clean and free or available at a reasonable cost. There is also a need to respond to specific, unusual or temporary situations. For certain locations or for events that attract large numbers of people, we need to provide flexible and appropriate solutions, with genuine, mobile and innovative sanitary facilities that are no longer makeshift solutions or unappealing sites set up on a moment’s notice.

Respect for privacy: a principle often flouted

Access to public toilets is therefore a fundamental right that is rarely respected, and when it is, it is respect for privacy that most often leaves something to be desired. By their design and their location in the public space, most toilets violate the principles of privacy and discretion that should be paramount: ill-fitting partitions, doors without locks, incongruous surveillance cameras, entrances and exits exposed to everyone’s gaze, and sometimes queues. Many people are reluctant to use these spaces, which become a source of stress, particularly for those who fear intrusions or prying eyes, such as women, children or people from minority groups. Questions of use also include concerns about hygiene. Insufficient cleaning can make a toilet unappealing. Some people, particularly women and children once again, are forced to abstain or even not leave their homes to avoid dirty, smelly toilets.

Increasing the number of decent toilets in the city is a public health priority. It is also essential to rethink their design and maintenance so that they provide a safe environment where everyone can satisfy their natural needs with dignity. Their installation must comply with the basic principles of hospitality and privacy: protective sheltering, appropriate fencing, equipment in good condition, functional locks, carefully considered lighting. Regular cleaning is essential.

The contribution of mobile toilets to ecological and urban issues

Because toilets are more than just a place to go, they’re a living space where different social microcosms can come together in a variety of circumstances, so it’s a good idea to have mobile toilets that move and evolve according to needs: on Monday at a market, on Wednesday at another, on Friday at a night concert. Mobile toilets, absolutely, but above all toilets that don’t have a negative impact on the environment. Since they require no plinths or earthworks, the toilets can disappear as quickly as they appeared, without leaving the slightest trace of their presence on the site. The first responsible and environmentally-friendly aspect of mobile toilets is that they are quick and easy to install.

Others have to do with the simplicity of how they are manufactured and operated. Climate emergency and resource management have become a priority, and toilets must evolve accordingly. The use of dry or self-contained toilets is an effective alternative: they reduce the use of drinking water and ensure functional waste management. Sustainable mobile toilet solutions, made from recycled or reusable materials, also play a key role in reducing the ecological footprint of infrastructure. Today, there are also processes in place for reusing urine: after fermentation, urine can be used as a biostimulant to reduce the need for mineral fertilisers.

Mobile toilets that are easy to deploy and environmentally friendly are an innovative solution to today’s ecological challenges, as well as to growing needs in cities, at public events, in parks or in suburban areas.

The need for political commitment

On World Toilet Day, it is time to make access to public toilets a real social issue. Towns and cities must undertake to provide their residents and visitors with a sufficient number of sanitary facilities that respect their privacy and align with current environmental imperatives. Such a commitment, which might seem elementary, would constitute a true revolution in attitudes and practices. In fact, it would simply be a sign of consideration for citizens, of a desire to care about their health and their daily lives. Innovative mobile solutions must be able to play their part in this desire, and become part of people’s habits and ways of thinking about urban planning. It is our shared responsibility to promote sensible, caring and sustainable solutions so that everyone, whatever their gender, age, situation or state of health, can satisfy a natural need in safe and dignified conditions.

On World Toilet Day, Enygea, an expert in mobile and temporary hygiene solutions, in collaboration with Chantal Deckmyn, architect and anthropologist, and author of a manual on hospitality in public spaces, invites us to rethink public sanitary infrastructure to meet the needs of all and protect our planet.
